How the St. Peter's Basilica Underground Tour Works
Four steps from Piazza Risorgimento to the dome's viewing gallery — 2,000 years of history beneath your feet.
Meet at Piazza della Città Leonina
Your licensed guide and the KAY KAY TOURS team wait at Piazza della Città Leonina, 2, holding a red sign. Arrive 15 minutes early — headsets are distributed on the spot so you can hear every word inside the Basilica.
Tour St. Peter's Basilica with a Licensed Guide
Pass mandatory security, then walk the marble nave with a Vatican-licensed guide. You'll stand before Michelangelo's Pietà, beneath Bernini's Baldachin, and gaze up at colossal mosaics that look like paintings until you're close enough to read the tesserae.
Descend into the Vatican Grottoes & Papal Tombs
The underground portion takes you into the Vatican Grottoes — papal tombs lining both walls, the Confessio above St. Peter's Tomb, and the original 4th-century Constantinian walls you can touch. This is the section the free walk-up entry does not reach.
Climb the Michelangelo Dome (Optional)
With the Dome Climb option, the elevator carries you to the first terrace; then roughly 320 steps inside the curve of the dome lead to the cupola — and a 360° panorama over St. Peter's Square and Rome. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your start time.

What Guests Say About the St. Peter's Basilica Underground Tour
"This was one of the best things we did on our trip to Rome! Our guide Frederico was absolutely fabulous- informative, funny, entertaining while also totally reverent, and very thoughtful of us with our two younger kids - I would truly take any tour anywhere with him! Highly recommend this as the best way to see St Peter’s."

"Valerio our tour guide was a wonderful tour, accommodating and thoughtful and weary of those who tried to skip our line. He also shared a wealth of knowledge. He was genuine and truly knowledgeable of the history of St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican in general. His explanations while in the line made the long line outside in the hot sun very bearable. Thank you Valerio!"

"Tour was excellent, Federico gave a very insightful and fun tour! Grazie for making this experience amazing!"
"Everything was perfect, the guide was the best of the best!🙂 thank you Sofia!🙂"
"We had Sophia as our tour guide and she was fantastic! Really made the experience enjoyable and knew so much information! She had a great way of explaining things and made it enjoyable for our teenage daughter too :) we had to queue for about half an hour for the metal detectors to get into the Vatican City but she filled the time talking about history of the city, the Swiss guards, how to become a citizen of the Vatican (very interesting!) and also knew about other areas of the Vatican when asked. The tour of the basilica was utterly breathtaking and the dome climb was a wonderful experience. Wouldn’t recommend if you are claustrophobic but my family and I had a great time - the views at the top are so worth it! The only thing that would have made it perfect would be for the tour company to have made themselves more visible at the meeting point. We worked it out but there was no flag or distinguishing features to advertise who they were. But all in all a fabulous tour - thank you!"
"It was amazing. thank you to Franceszo for creating a fun atmospehre and sharing a lot of knowledge and interesting facts"
"The tour was great. Our guide, Sofia was engaging and very knowledgeable and made it a fun experience whilst waiting in line. Well worth the cost."

"Claudio gave a very nice tour and entertained is very well durven the queuse"
"Valerio was very informative and made the tour entertaining despite the long queue. Had a good sense of humor and answered all my asinine questions. Would definitely recommend. Fair warning: booking may run concurrent to your other tours so be sure to space them out at least 4 hours apart, especially during the busy season."

"Sophia was just amazing!!! The best tour guide I've ever had and belive me, I traveled a lot and had many activities across the globe! The way she tells the history and fund facts behind it is just fantastic and memorable. Please give her a raise, she totally deserves it! Thank you! ❤️"

"Volodymyr was an excellent tour guide and incredibly knowledgeable. He provided lots of interesting facts with a brilliant sense of humour. Could not fault him, very personable and just a lovely man."

St. Peter's Basilica Underground Tour — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before booking your underground tour of St. Peter's Basilica.
Entry to St. Peter's Basilica itself is free, but a guided underground tour (from $38.59) gives you a licensed Vatican guide, radio headsets, access to the Vatican Grottoes with the papal tombs, the chance to touch the original 4th-century Constantinian walls, and — with the dome-climb option — a ticket to the top of the Michelangelo dome. Without a booking you can only join the free queue and visit the main floor on your own.
This tour includes a complete guided walk of St. Peter's Basilica, the papal tombs in the Vatican Grottoes, a professional licensed guide, radio headsets so you can hear the guide clearly inside the Basilica, and — if you select the Dome Climb option — entry tickets to the top of the dome. Entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel is not included.
The Michelangelo dome of St. Peter's Basilica has approximately 551 steps from ground level to the cupola viewing platform. The elevator (included with the dome-climb option) covers the first section to the inner balcony, leaving roughly 320 additional steps to the very top. The staircase narrows and curves with the inner shell of the dome, so a steady pace is recommended. See our dome climb guide for what to expect step by step.
Yes, the main floor of St. Peter's Basilica is free to visit. However, climbing the dome (paid ticket, included in this tour's dome-climb option), the guided Vatican Grottoes visit, and the deeper Scavi necropolis (a separate, permit-only Vatican excavation) are not free. Free walk-up entry also provides no guide or headsets — inside a Basilica the size of a football pitch, commentary makes a significant difference.
The Vatican Grottoes are the upper underground level directly beneath the main Basilica floor — they hold the papal tombs and the Confessio above St. Peter's Tomb, and they are what this tour visits. The Scavi (Necropolis) is one level deeper, where the original 1st-century burial site sits beneath the Constantinian foundations. The Scavi requires a separate permit booked months in advance directly with the Vatican's Ufficio Scavi — it is not part of any standard guided tour. See our Scavi tour vs. Vatican Grottoes guide for a full comparison of both underground levels and how to book each.
Yes — the Basilica is open to the public for free, but expect queues of 1–3 hours in peak season, mandatory security checks, and no commentary inside. The guided underground tour gets you a licensed Vatican guide, headsets, access to the Vatican Grottoes' papal-tomb area, and the chance to touch the original 4th-century walls — none of which is accessible via the free walk-up queue. To pick the quietest slot, see our best time to visit St. Peter's Basilica guide.
This guided tour runs 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on whether you choose the Regular option (Basilica + Papal Tombs) or the Dome Climb option (which adds the ascent to the cupola). Arrive at least 15 minutes before your start time at Piazza della Città Leonina for headset distribution and the mandatory security check.
Yes. The tour visits the Vatican Grottoes directly above St. Peter's Tomb — including the Confessio (the small marble crypt beneath Bernini's Baldachin) and the papal tombs lining the underground walls. You will also see and touch the original 4th-century Constantinian Basilica walls. The 1st-century archaeological tomb chamber itself is one level further down in the Scavi — a separate, permit-only Vatican tour. Our Scavi vs. Grottoes guide explains the difference between the two underground levels.
There is a strict dress code: shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women, with no exceptions — no shorts, tank tops, or sleeveless dresses even in summer. A light scarf or shawl over the shoulders works if you forget. Comfortable shoes are essential: the tour covers long marble floors and, with the dome-climb option, roughly 320 steps inside the dome. All visitors also pass mandatory airport-style security. Our dress code, security and rules guide covers everything to wear, bring, and leave behind.
On this tour, the dome climb is a bookable option. A ticket-included elevator takes you to the first terrace level, saving roughly 230 steps; from there, approximately 320 narrow steps inside the inner and outer dome shells lead to the cupola viewing platform and a 360° panorama over Rome. The climb is not suitable for guests with claustrophobia or significant mobility difficulties. Read our St. Peter's dome climb guide for exactly what the ascent is like and practical tips.
Based on 4,144 verified reviews averaging 4.8/5 — and a 'Likely to sell out' badge from GetYourGuide — yes. From $38.59 you get a licensed Vatican guide with headsets, the Vatican Grottoes, the papal tombs, and the original 4th-century walls, all of which the free entry does not cover. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before your start time, so booking early carries no real risk.
The meeting point is Piazza della Città Leonina, 2, just outside St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Look for staff holding a red 'KAY KAY TOURS' sign. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start — the team distributes radio headsets there and guides the group through security. The piazza is a 10-minute walk from Ottaviano metro station (Line A).
